Research

Besides its project-based work, the FES Syria Project seeks to promote a better understanding of Syria’s contemporary history, as well as its political, economic and social development. By encouraging young academics and analysts to pursue their research interests, FES contributes to the discussion and analysis of socio-cultural, socio-economic and political developments in Syria – both before and after the popular uprising in 2011.

With this in mind, FES supports independent research initiatives and offers print and online formats for the publication of completed work, such as books or booklets, FES studies or policy papers.

While the research programme is generally open for any proposals related to relevant socio-cultural, socio-economic and political developments in Syria, thematic areas of particular interest include:

• Developments in Syrian civil society both in the diaspora and in Syria itself;
• Feminist perspectives on developments in Syria from international and local viewpoints;
• Local and regional analysis of peace and security from citizen-centred and particularly feminist perspectives;
• In-depth analysis of socio-economic developments, the war economy and HLP issues;
• Emerging political entities;
• Social justice and gender equality.

The research programme welcomes unsolicited applications from interested candidates. All research proposals must take a gender perspective into account. Applications or enquiries should be sent to info.syria(at)fes.de. Full applications should contain:

• A proposal detailing the background, relevance, method, time plan and budget of the research;
• The CV of the researcher(s), showing academic track record and suitability for conducting the proposed research.
