The Syrian uprising has sparked a mushrooming of independent journalistic and artistic output reaching far beyond the long-imposed political boundaries. In an attempt to overcome the divisive and polarizing effects of partisan media and constrained cultural production, these newly emerging initiatives endeavoured to break down socially constructed barriers and, instead, emphasize the unity and common interests of the Syrian people.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung provides long-term, context-specific support to media projects that promote this vision of a pluralistic, peaceful and democratic Syria. It herein seeks to contribute to the development of a diverse Syrian media landscape of independent, impartial and sustainable media, founded on common values of political and religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and the right to self-expression.
The Foundation also collaborates with Syrian cultural groups, film makers, artists and writers to support their creative work in various ways. It supports literature projects, archiving initiatives and documentaries.
