Human Rights

“Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 3)

With no end to the devastating Syrian conflict in sight, the human rights situation in the country continues to deteriorate, fanned by escalating violence and a seemingly intractable cycle of impunity. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung thus seeks to help Syrian civil society raise awareness of human rights violations and advocate more effectively for the protection of civilians and the adherence to international humanitarian law in their country.

Furthermore, the Foundation works in the field of transitional justice, developing the capacity of Syrian activists and lawyers to document attrocities committed by all sides of the conflict and initiate prosecution mechanisms. Ensuring that Syrians have the skills to contribute to the pursuit of justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators of the crimes committed during the conflict will strengthen the rule of law and contribute towards truth and reconciliation in post-conflict Syria.
